Brazilian Funk Becomes Official Genre on Beatport

Beatport Adds Brazilian Funk as a New Genre — and Launches “Discover Brazil”

Beatport has officially added Brazilian Funk as a genre category, recognizing it as one of the most powerful and culturally rich exports of Brazil’s music scene.

Also known as baile funk or funk carioca, the genre emerged from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and has long played a key role in Brazil’s underground electronic sound. Now, its influence is spreading globally — and gaining recognition on one of the world’s top platforms for DJs and producers.

“Brazilian Funk is more than a genre – it’s a cultural force with deep electronic roots,” said Raphael Pujol, VP of Global Curation at Beatport. “After witnessing its electrifying impact firsthand, we knew it was time to bring it to Beatport.”

In addition to launching the new genre, Beatport also announced changes to improve accessibility for Brazilian users:

  • The platform is now available in Portuguese,

  • Subscriptions to Beatport and Beatsource are offered in Brazilian Real with up to 60% discount,

  • And a new curated page, “Discover Brazil,” has been launched to spotlight rising Brazilian artists and labels.
